Gursis's father said – my son was killed in his sleep
However, Gursis Singh's father Charanjit Singh, 52, told the media that his son was “killed in his sleep” and suspected that the accused was on drugs. Charanjit Singh, who runs a packaging material manufacturing unit in Ludhiana, said that he has got him medically examined.
“A few hours before our son was brutally murdered, he had spoken to us and was very happy,” he said. He was also looking forward to calling us to Canada soon and said that we would be together as a family again. He used to prepare for college at night and cook his food. He said that he had also had a long conversation with his mother a few hours before he was killed in his sleep.
Gursis Singh is survived by his parents and a younger brother Manraj Singh who studies in Ludhiana. The family lives in Phase-7, Focal Point, Chandigarh Road in Ludhiana. Family members said the accused lived in a neighboring room in the apartment and the two men shared only a common kitchen.
The family also suspects the killer of being intoxicated
In his initial statement to the police, the accused said that he stabbed my son in self-defence, but later the police came to know that he was killed in his sleep. We suspect that the accused was under the influence of some drugs, but this can only be cleared by the police.
Mother was shocked after hearing the news of son's death, admitted to hospital
Shocked by the news of Gursis's death, his mother was admitted to the hospital. Charanjeet said that she is still not talking. The family has appealed to the Central government to help bring their son's body to Punjab for cremation and urged for financial help as they had used all their savings to send their son to Canada.
Students and colleges are trying to send the dead body back home
Meanwhile, Lambton College, where Gursis studied, said it is in contact with the student's family, and is working on funeral arrangements and repatriation. Students and other local community members have also started an online money fund to help the family financially.
Referring to the recent changes in India-Canada relations, Charanjit said that I cannot say that my son was targeted because of his nationality. Because police investigation is going on. We have full confidence in Canada's police and judicial system. I am sure my son will get justice.
Sarnia police said they were alerted to the stabbing at 4:59 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1 in a statement.
