Saudi Arabia has backed down from its demand to sign a big defense deal with America. In exchange for this deal, Saudi had to restore normal relations with Israel. Now he is pressurizing America to sign a small defense military corporation agreement.
According to Reuters, there is anger against Israel in the Middle East and Muslim countries due to the Gaza war. In such a situation, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) does not want to make any such major agreement. However, MBS's condition is that if Israel takes concrete steps to create the state of Palestine, then he can recognize it.
At the same time, according to the report, Netanyahu knows that if he gives any kind of concession to Hamas, he will have to face huge opposition in his country. In such a situation, both the leaders are embroiled in the internal politics of their respective countries.
A deal may be made before Biden leaves the White House
Western diplomats told Reuters – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still excited to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia. If this happens then it will prove to be a milestone. This will give Israel acceptance on a large scale in the Arab world.
Saudi and the US hope to sign a small defense military agreement before President Joe Biden leaves the White House in January. This agreement includes joint military exercises, partnership in defense industry and promotion of Saudi investment in high technology.
Full defense deal requires two-thirds majority in the US Senate.
According to the report, any US-Saudi full defense deal must be passed with a two-thirds majority in the US Senate. Unless Saudi recognizes Israel, this will not be possible. The agreement currently under discussion includes joint military exercises to deal with threats from Iran. It will promote partnerships between US and Saudi defense firms, and reinforce the growing Sino-Saudi partnership.
This MoU will promote Saudi investment in high technology, especially the drone industry. However, in this deal, America will not have the responsibility to protect Saudi from any attack.
The biggest concern regarding this agreement is Donald Trump's return to the White House. Trump has never been a supporter of creating a separate state of Palestine. However, Arab officials believe that Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have very good relations with Mohammed bin Salman, so they will be able to convince them for this.
Donald Trump and MBS have a very good relationship. During his presidency, Trump played a big role in making the defense deal between Israel, UAE and Saudi.
