Harini Amarasuriya became the third woman Prime Minister of Sri Lanka: studied from Delhi University, became PM only 5 years after entering politics.

Harini Amarasuriya became MP for the first time in 2020. Before joining politics, she was a professor at the Sri Lanka Open University.

Harini Amarasuriya has been made the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. She is the third female leader of Sri Lanka to reach this position. She has also been the Prime Minister in the interim government formed in Sri Lanka two months ago.

Harini Amarsuriya, who was made the Prime Minister, studied at Hindu College of Delhi University from 1991 to 1994. He had entered politics only 5 years ago.

Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 14 November. In this, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's alliance NPP had won. The new cabinet of the government was formed on Monday.

President Anura Kumar Dissanayake administered the oath of office to the cabinet members at the Presidential Secretariat. There are 22 members in this cabinet including the President. 2 women and 2 Tamil MPs have also been included in the cabinet. The names of deputy ministers will be announced later.

According to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the number of cabinet ministers cannot exceed 30 and the number of deputy ministers cannot exceed 40. Dissanayake has kept the cabinet small to reduce the costs of government.

Before him, Sirimao Bandaranaike (3 times) and Chandrika Kumaratunga (1 time) had been the women Prime Ministers of the country. Harini Amarasuriya became MP for the first time in 2020. Before entering politics, Amarasuriya was a professor at the Sri Lanka Open University.

In 2015, she joined the protest against the government. During this time, she came in contact with Dissanayake and joined his party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in the year 2019. In the year 2020, she became an MP for the first time by winning the parliamentary elections.

The first session of the Sri Lankan Parliament is scheduled to begin on November 21. This time most of the MPs in Parliament have been newly elected.

After the swearing in, President Dissanayake addressed the Cabinet. In this he said-

Most of the ministers are new not only to the Cabinet but also to the Parliament. We know very well that they all are honest and not corrupt and they have the courage to fulfill the expectations of the people. We hope that all ministers will work responsibly.

President Dissanayake's coalition won 159 out of 225 seats in the parliamentary elections held on 14 November. His alliance got 61 percent votes in the elections.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's coalition NPP has won the Sri Lankan parliamentary elections. The results of all the seats have come out. NPP has won 141 seats out of 196 seats to be decided on the basis of districts. According to the results, NPP has got 61% i.e. 68 lakh votes.

The main opposition SJB party is in second place with 18% votes and 35 seats. Apart from this, the National Democratic Front supported by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has got only 5% votes and 3 seats.
