A person needs about 8 to 9 hours of sleep a day to stay healthy. If someone does not get enough sleep continuously, it can have a negative effect on mood. There may be difficulty in daily work. Many types of mental and physical problems can occur.
But the story of Daisuke Hori, a 40-year-old entrepreneur from Japan, is different. He sleeps only 30 minutes a day for the last 12 years. He has trained his brain in such a way that he can stay healthy and do his daily chores efficiently even with minimal sleep.
Now he is running the Short Sleep Training Association, where he has taught more than 2100 students how to stay healthy even with minimal sleep.
It is fine that Hori himself does not sleep and remains healthy. But medical experts do not agree with teaching others how to remain healthy by sleeping less.
According to Neetu Jain, Senior Consultant, Department of Pulmonology, PSRI Hospital, New Delhi, reducing the sleep required by the body through any training does not have good results. This can lead to chronic sleep deprivation and the risk of many diseases. If someone gets less sleep on their own, then it may be due to short sleeper syndrome. Promoting less sleep as a mental training is not the right approach.
so today 'Health report' I will talk about short sleeper syndrome. Also, we will know that-
What is short sleeper syndrome
Short sleeper syndrome (SSS) is also known as short sleep syndrome. It is a condition in which people need less sleep than most people. A person suffering from short sleeper syndrome sleeps 4 to 6 hours or less every night, but remains energetic and healthy like other people when he wakes up.
What are the symptoms of short sleeper syndrome
Its main symptom is sleeping for 4 to 6 hours every night. Even if there is extra time to sleep, one cannot sleep more than this. The sleep of a person suffering from this syndrome is short and fixed. He does not have to make any extra effort to sleep less. It happens very organically.
What are its symptoms, see in the graphic.
How common is short sleeper syndrome
According to a study published in the science journal Neuron in 2019, this is a rare condition. This condition affects only 2-4 out of about 100,000 people. This means that we may spend our entire lives and never meet anyone with this syndrome.
What causes short sleeper syndrome?
Studies are being conducted continuously on the causes of short sleeper syndrome. No very precise reasons have been found behind it yet. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, gene mutations have been identified in people who naturally feel less need for sleep. Changes have been observed in their DEC2 gene or ADRB1 gene. Researchers believe that due to these genetic changes, people with short sleep syndrome are able to feel refreshed despite less sleep. Usually these changes in sleep occur in adolescence.
However, some people may face these problems even at an older age. Hormonal changes are considered to be the reason behind this.
Training programs for less sleep are dangerous
According to Dr. Neetu Jain, we should not be influenced by a person's low sleep capacity. A person may have the natural ability to remain refreshed even after sleeping for less than 6 hours. Whereas most people in the world need 8 to 9 hours of sleep a day.
If we also imitate less sleep, it will have a direct impact on our health. This can weaken the cognitive function of the brain. It can also have a bad effect on our digestive system, immune system and heart health. Sleeping less for several consecutive days can lead to chronic sleep deprivation. This can increase the risk of many dangerous diseases.
Is short sleeper syndrome curable?
Dr. Neetu says that we have to understand that short sleeper syndrome is not a sleep disorder or disease. It is a rare sleep condition found in some rare people.
No health issues have been seen due to this till now. Hence there is no need for its treatment. In some cases, some treatments have been given to bring this sleep condition to normal condition. They have not been successful.
Sleep hygiene is essential for a good sleep
Sleep hygiene is essential for good and quality sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, people who have trouble falling asleep or waking up frequently should follow these sleep hygiene tips.
