According to a study published in Nature Neuroscience, the amount of grey matter in many parts of the brain of women decreases during pregnancy and after becoming a mother. Grey matter is a type of tissue in the brain and spinal cord that plays an important role in helping you function normally on a day-to-day basis.

What are the symptoms of pregnancy brain

Pregnancy brain is a normal and temporary condition and it gets better after delivery. It is not necessary that every woman goes through this problem, but for many women it is a normal part of pregnancy. In America and Europe, people take it seriously, but in countries like India it is mostly ignored.

According to a research published in the University of British Columbia, many changes take place in the brain of women after pregnancy. Especially their ability to think, understand and feel is greatly affected after becoming a mother.

When do pregnancy brain problems start?

Pregnancy brain can start from the first three-four months of pregnancy. During pregnancy, many hormones are released in the body and as their quantity increases, changes start taking place in the brain as well. During this time, many changes also take place in the body. Insomnia, irritability, forgetting things emerge as common problems.

According to a study 'Cognitive Impairment During Pregnancy: A Meta Analysis', published in an Australian journal, the negative impact on the ability to think and understand is called 'pregnancy brain' or 'baby brain'.

Dr. Seema says that in a problem like loss of memory, one has to face problems like forgetting small things, forgetting where they kept things, not being able to focus on any work, having difficulty in keeping one's things organized, etc.

Pregnant women start feeling hesitant in taking even simple decisions. This condition occurs due to hormonal changes in women during pregnancy. Major changes in hormones during pregnancy affect the brain, which affects memory and attention. Sleep also decreases during pregnancy, which directly affects the brain. Stress levels also increase due to lack of sleep.

How can pregnant women protect themselves from pregnancy brain?

Pregnant women always keep thinking about their unborn child. Like how will the unborn child be, will he have any problem, whether the child is growing properly or not, all such doubts arise in the mother's mind. When these doubts become excessive, they become the cause of stress and irritability. Due to this, she is neither able to concentrate on any work nor is able to pay attention to herself.

When the child is born after 9 months, about 80% of the placental hormones stop coming out of the woman's body within 48 hours of delivery. The role of the mother changes with the birth of the newborn. Due to lack of sleep and the new responsibility of raising the newborn, the pregnancy brain turns into 'mummy brain'. But this problem also goes away with time.

It often happens that women feel nauseous after eating during or after pregnancy and are unable to pay attention to their food. Dr. Seema advises them not to do this. Women should take nutritious food. Also, they should include yoga and meditation in their lifestyle.
