Regular cases will not be heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday-Thursday: transfer petition, bail case and other cases will be listed instead; CJI Khanna changed the rules

After taking oath as CJI on November 11, Justice Sanjeev Khanna has changed many rules of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Saturday issued a new circular regarding the hearing of cases. According to this, cases for regular hearing on Wednesday and Thursday will not be listed.

The circular said that transfer petitions, bail cases and other cases will be listed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Cases for regular hearing will not be listed.

At the same time, cases involving special bench or part heard matter, whether miscellaneous or regular, have been directed to be listed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Such cases will be listed in the post-lunch session or as per the instructions of the competent authority.

As per the current practice, new cases are listed in the Supreme Court on Monday and Friday. These are also called Miscellaneous Days. Tuesday-Thursday has been fixed for regular hearing, where the final hearing of cases takes place.

The new CJI of the Supreme Court is Sanjeev Khanna, he took oath on 11 November.

Supreme Court roster system changed After assuming office on November 11, CJI Khanna made changes in the roster made for hearing cases. It was decided that the first three benches headed by the CJI and two senior judges would hear letter petitions and public interest litigations (PILs).

Under the new roster of case allotment, petitions and PILs based on letters written to the Supreme Court will be heard by a bench headed by CJI Khanna, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant.

CJI Khanna said- Immediate listing-hearing will not be oral. Now lawyers in the Supreme Court will not be able to get any case immediately listed and heard orally. New CJI Sanjeev Khanna had said on November 12 that lawyers would have sent an email or written letter for this. CJI has outlined a citizen centric agenda for judicial reform.
