Sonia's father Shankar Mandal came to Delhi from Darbhanga in Bihar 30 years ago. Since then he has been living in Nangloi. Sonia's parents, brother, sister and brother-in-law live in a two-room rented house.
Sanju's house is about 500 meters away from Sonia's house. Both of them met one and a half years ago. Both of them met because of common friends.
Both Sonia and Sanju were active on social media. Both used to upload photos and videos with each other.
On October 21, Sonia suddenly left the house. The family members were suspicious of Sanju. When the police caught Sanju, he confessed that he had strangled Sonia to death and buried the deadbody in Bahu Akbarpur, Rohtak, where his maternal uncle lives. The postmortem report revealed that Sonia's ribs and waist bone were broken. There were marks of being beaten with a stick on his back.
Sonia's family claims that they did not know that Sanju is a Muslim. Police are saying that Sonia's family knew about Sanju's religion. Sanju's sister-in-law is also a Hindu, hence the case was linked to Love Jihad, but the police is denying it. Dainik Global News Daily reached Sonia's house to understand the entire matter. Here we met Sonia's mother Ranjana Devi and elder brother Manish Singh.
Sonia lived with her family in this house in Nangloi. All are tenants in the house. As soon as you enter the gate, the first house is Sonia's.
Mother said- Had the police heard the complaint, the daughter would have been saved. Ranjana Devi says, 'Sonia's father runs a tea stall. I work in homes. There is an elder daughter, she is married. Son Manish drives an e-rickshaw. We used to go to work. Sonia lived alone at home. He had studied till 10th standard.
'Sonia came to me at 4:30 in the morning of 21st October. I was sleeping. She said that I am going out, will come by the time it gets light. I was sleepy, so I couldn't understand properly what she was saying. I woke up at 5 in the morning. Called Sonia, but she did not pick up.
'After some time the phone was answered, but Sanju spoke from the other end. He said that Sonia hates you all and does not want to talk. I asked to talk to Sonia, but Sanju did not make me talk even once. The mobile was switched off after 12 noon. Then I went to Nangloi police station.
Daughter was pregnant, Sanju's mother wanted abortion Ranjana Devi further says, 'On October 22, son Manish had gone to the police station to file an FIR. I didn't know anything about Sanju or Salim. She used to talk to Salim as a ghost. His mobile number was also saved in the same name. When I used to ask who she was talking to, Sonia used to say that she was a friend.
'We did not know what Sonia does after leaving our house. We leave for work in the morning. Then return at 7 or 8 pm. Sonia did not tell us about her pregnancy for four months. In July she told us about her relationship with Sanju. She was pregnant then. We called Sanju's mother to our house.
'Sanju's mother said that Sonia should get an abortion. We will not keep him in our house. Sonia was not ready for abortion. Sanju had not come then. He said many times that he would come to visit, but I never saw him. Sanju's mother told me that we are not Muslims. I had talked about Sonia's relationship elsewhere, but Sonia wanted to marry Sanju only.
Ranjana Devi says, 'Sanju's brother Sahil has also married a Hindu girl. He had threatened Sonia. Sonia had narrated Sahil's audio message to me. In it Sahil was saying to leave Sanju, otherwise they will cut you and throw you in the drain.
Sanju alias Salim's house is about half a kilometer away from Sonia's house. Sanju's family also lived on rent. Right now the gate is locked.
Brother said – Sonia's dead body was buried four feet below Sonia's brother Manish was very close to her. Sonia was fond of making reels. He had more than 7 thousand followers on Instagram. Sonia and Manish used to make videos together for social media. Manish had also got a new mobile for this.
Regarding Sonia's disappearance, Manish says, 'I went to Nangloi police station at 8 pm to lodge an FIR. The policemen said to wait for a day. Nothing will happen to the girl. I kept saying that something wrong had happened with my sister. His number is being switched off.
'The next day on October 23, at 2 pm, I got a call from Paschim Vihar police station. When I reached there, Sanju and his friend Pankaj were standing in the police station. The police showed me my Aadhaar card. Sonia had taken a small bag with her. These people had thrown the bag in the canal.
'When the police recovered the bag, my Aadhaar card was found in it. In the police station, Sanju was repeatedly asked about Sonia. He was saying that Sonia is alive. I will bring him by 12 noon the next day. After 6 hours, officers from Nangloi police station reached Paschim Vihar police station.
Manish says,
Sanju was strictly interrogated at Nangloi police station. Sanju told that he along with his friends Hrithik and Pankaj had murdered Sonia. He also told the place in Rohtak where Sonia's dead body was buried.
Manish further explains, 'The next day on 24th October we reached that place. When a 4 feet pit was dug at the place indicated by Sanju, the dead body was found. His postmortem was done. The report revealed that Sonia's ribs and waist bone were broken. Marks of being hit with a stick were found on his back.
Manish says, 'Sonia was 4 months pregnant, when she first told me this. I told my mother. We had told her earlier also to stay away from this boy, but she was pressurizing Sanju to marry her.
Sanju alias Salim's house locked, family missing After meeting Sonia's family, we went to Sanju's house. Found it locked here. There is something written in Urdu on the nameplate. Sanju's family is a resident of Jhajjar, Haryana. Neighbors told that everyone had locked the house and left on the morning of 23 October.
Here we found Vipin Prasad. He has been living in Nangloi for 15 years. Sanju has his factory in front of his house. Vipin says, 'Sanju's family has been living here for 15 years. Father is a driver. Elder brother works in some school.
When we started searching for Sahil's wife, we came to know that her maternal home is also in this area. The family lives in Amar Colony. When we reached his house, the family members refused to talk.
Area head Jagpal Sharma says, 'It was winter last year. There was a lot of uproar when we came to know about Sahil and his wife. Shiv Sena people also came. Ultimately both of them got married. The girl's grandfather was a good name in the area. They did not want them to get married. The girl never returned home after marriage. She lives with Sahil only.
Police said- It is not a case of love jihad, Salim lived with Sonia only. Nangloi police has arrested Sanju along with his friends Pankaj and Hrithik on charges of Sonia's murder. In this case, the police have a different story from Sonia's family. According to Nangloi police, Sanju has told that Sonia had been harassing him for marriage for a long time. She would not leave him alone. When Sanju came to know about Sonia's pregnancy, he used to stay at Sonia's house.
Both were living together at Sonia's house for some time. Sonia's parents knew everything. Sanju and his friends had taken Sonia on the morning of 21st October with the intention of killing her. After killing him, his deadbody was buried in Rohtak. Sonia's purse was found near a drain in Paschim Vihar.
After Sonia's murder, Sanju and Pankaj were sitting in a park. A bike without number plate was standing there. The police team that came from near the park thought that the bike belonged to Sanju and Pankaj. They brought both of them to the police station. He was interrogated there. It was revealed that both were residents of Nangloi. Paschim Vihar police handed over both of them to us.
On the condition of anonymity, a police officer says, 'Sonia had told everything to her family. Salim did not hide the fact of being a Muslim. His mother had refused to marry Sonia.
'Sonia's family wanted both of them to get married. For this, mother had bought a cylinder and given it. Brother had given 20 thousand rupees. Sonia had also created a ruckus at Sanju's house a day before the murder.
