Shami will not go to Australia for Border-Gavaskar Trophy: BCCI medical team declared not fit; left knee swelling

Shami is out of the team after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami will not go to Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The BCCI medical team has not declared him fit yet.

In a statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, it has been said that after the surgery on his right heel, he has recovered from that problem, but there is swelling in his left knee. Which will take time to recover.

Earlier, on December 4, the Indian selectors had asked for the fitness report of Mohammed Shami from National Cricket Academy (NCA) physio Nitin Patel. Patel was with the team throughout the tournament at Syed Mushtaq to keep an eye on his fitness.

BCCI gave information about Shami's fitness by posting on X.

Tried my best to prove match fitness: BCCI BCCI posted that Shami tried his best to regain match fitness after heel surgery. He played for Bengal in a Ranji match against Madhya Pradesh in November. He bowled 43 overs in this match.

Shami then played in all nine matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and took 11 wickets. Participated in extra practice sessions to prepare for test matches. Shami's left knee has become swollen due to continuous playing of matches. The BCCI medical team has admitted that it will take time for him to recover and he is not fit for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

During this time, Shami will remain under the supervision of medical staff at BCCI's Center of Excellence and will recover. If his knee heals, he will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shami has been included in the Bengal team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Syed Mushtaq Ali performed brilliantly in the tournament Many bowling experts believed that Shami was looking overweight in his first Ranji Trophy match of this season against Madhya Pradesh. In the match, he bowled 42 overs including both the innings. But he was having problems with his follow through.

Shami looked completely in his element against Chandigarh in Syed Mushtaq Ali. He gave only 11 runs in his first 3 overs of the spell. Including Syed Mushtaq Ali and Ranji Trophy, Shami bowled a total of 64 overs. In which he took 16 wickets. Shami bowled 42.3 overs in Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh and took 7 wickets. Whereas Mushtaq Ali bowled 31.3 overs and took 9 wickets in eight matches.

Mohammed Shami performed brilliantly against Bengal, first with both bat and then ball. He scored 32 runs at a strike rate of 188.23. Shami also hit 3 fours and 2 sixes in the innings. While bowling at a speed of 139kmph, he took 1 wicket for 25 runs in 4 overs.

Last match played on 19th November Shami played his last international match in the ODI World Cup final against Australia on 19 November 2023. Shami went to England in January this year and got his ankle surgery done. He spent the last several months undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He has played 64 test matches for India. Shami has 229 test wickets in his name.
