The need for LLB for court reporting ends: SC gives 3 types of recognition to journalists; Parking facility is available in the court

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is retiring on 10 November 2024. Before that, he has given a big gift to the journalists who want to become Supreme Court correspondents. He has said that now journalists do not need to take a law degree (LLB) to get recognition by the Supreme Court. However, apart from recognition, journalists can participate in the proceedings of the Supreme Court in two ways.

Chief Justice said in the meeting, 'I don't know why the condition of degree was kept'

Suchitra Kalyan Mohanty is a senior journalist covering the Supreme Court. Mohanty told Dainik Global News Daily,

Several the Chief Justice had invited some journalists for tea, I was one of them. Removing the requirement of LLB degree for recognition is a new initiative, but it is not an order of the court.

Chandrachud had told journalists in the meeting,

I have signed a file to increase the scope of Supreme Court accredited journalists. I don't know for what reason this condition was imposed that you should have passed LLB. Now we have relaxed it.

Mohanty explains that two types of journalists cover news in the Supreme Court – accredited and temporarily accredited. However, Mohanty does not have the permanent recognition of the Supreme Court. He doesn't even call it necessary.

Almost all facilities except parking are available to journalists with temporary recognition.

Chandrachud has also said that the journalists seeking affiliation will also get the facility to park their vehicles in the parking lot in the Supreme Court.

Less than 50 permanently accredited journalists in the Supreme Court

Mohanty says, 'At present there are about 40 permanently accredited journalists and around 100 temporarily accredited journalists in the Supreme Court. Nowadays, there is not much difference between the two types of beliefs, because now the court proceedings are available online.

'If there is no need to take video bytes etc., then separate online links are available to watch and listen to the hearing of each courtroom of the Supreme Court. All the things that accredited journalists get free of cost, like telephone directories of judges and lawyers, are also available online.

However, even if there is no recognition, one can attend the proceedings of the Supreme Court by taking a one-day pass to cover the news. Getting this pass has become easy with the Suswagtam app. By registering on the app, an e-mail is sent, the screenshot of which can be shown to the Supreme Court.
