Zeenat Aman married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985, the best phase of her career. However, their marriage faced many difficulties. In the very first year he realized that he had taken a wrong decision. Despite this, Zeenat maintained this relationship for 12 years for both her sons.
In an interview with Simi Garewal, Zeenat Aman talked about the difficult times of her marriage. She said, 'I married Mazhar Khan in 1985. In the first year of marriage, I had understood that I had made a mistake, but the decision to marry Mazhar was my own and that too against everyone's wishes, so I thought that now I will try to correct it. I'm not saying it was good for them either. Things were very difficult right from the first year. Firstly, I was pregnant and Mazhar was not with me. Secondly, at that time a big article was published in Stardust magazine, in which it was told that Mazhar was with another woman, which was also true.
Zeenat said, 'When my son was born, I thought I should end this marriage. We also discussed this, but then I thought that my child should get a chance, so I decided to maintain the marriage. I didn't just stop and leave, but tried everything possible to improve this relationship.
Zeenat said, 'When my younger son turned five years old, I thought of working, but just before that, Mazhar fell ill. After this, I struggled for his health and life for five years, which was a very difficult time.
Zeenat said, 'I tried everything possible. We went to every hospital in Mumbai. I learned to give injections, learned to do dressings, and had to live with a bag outside his body for 18 months, I also learned to change that bag. I even went abroad and found the best doctor. When that problem was solved and everything was fine, it made a huge impact on me. I was on the verge of mental breakdown. I didn't have anyone for 12 years who asked me, 'How are you?'
