According to Ujjain's astrologer Pt. Manish Sharma, do special worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu on the morning of Kartik Amavasya and meditate on incense for the ancestors in the afternoon. In the evening, light a lamp near Tulsi and worship Lakshmi-Vishnu again.
This is how you can worship Lord Vishnu
Offer Panchamrit to the idols of Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi. Fill the Dakshinavarti conch with water and milk and anoint it.
Offer red-yellow bright clothes and worship material to the Gods and Goddesses.
Decorate with necklace and flowers. Offer sweets with basil.
Perform Aarti by lighting incense sticks. At the end of the puja, ask God for forgiveness for your known or unknown mistakes.
Distribute Prasad and take it yourself. Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya mantra should be chanted during worship.

Do incense meditation for ancestors in the afternoon, because afternoon time is considered the best time to perform religious activities for ancestors.
Burn the pot made of cow dung and when the smoke stops coming out of the pot, then incense should be offered with jaggery and ghee on the embers of the pot. During this time one should keep meditating on the ancestors.
After offering incense, take water in the palm and offer water to the ancestors from the thumb side. This is a common method of providing incense.
You can do these auspicious things on Kartik Amavasya
There is also a tradition of bathing in rivers on Amavasya. If you are not able to take bath in the river, then you should take bath at home while meditating on all the pilgrimages and rivers. You can also take bath by mixing Ganga water in water. By doing this, one can get the same virtue as taking a holy bath at home.
After bathing, if you see any needy person around the house, then donate money, clothes and grains to him. One should donate as per one's capacity for green grass and care of cows in a cow shelter.
Offer it to Shivalinga with a copper pot and keep chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivay. Offer raw milk to God from a silver pot. After this offer pure water again. Decorate Shivlinga. Apply Tilak, offer Bilva Patra, Dhatura, fruits and flowers. Offer sweets to God. Perform Aarti by lighting incense sticks and lamps.
On Amavasya morning, after bathing, offer water to the Sun God. While offering water, one should keep chanting the mantra Om Suryay Namah. If there are defects related to Sun in the horoscope, donate jaggery.
Moon God should also be specially worshiped on Kartik Amavasya. To remove the defects associated with the planet Moon, milk should be offered to Shivalinga and milk should be donated to needy people. Light a lamp in front of Shivling and chant the mantra Son Somay Namah at least 108 times.
