Mathura Babu, a disciple of Paramhans ji, was very rich. Mathura Babu was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had built a temple of Lord Vishnu. The idol of God in the temple was decorated with very expensive clothes and jewellery.
People who saw the idol in the temple definitely praised the expensive makeup of the idol. Mathura Babu was very happy after hearing these things. Whenever Mathura Babu met Paramhans ji, he used to talk about his temple and expensive decorations.
Paramhans ji did not give any importance to expensive things, hence he used to listen to all the things of Mathura Babu very carefully, but did not say anything in response to these things.
One day Mathura Babu came running to Paramhans ji and asked him to come with him. There has been theft in my temple. The thief stole the idol's clothes and jewellery.
Mathura Babu reached the temple with Paramhans ji. After reaching the temple, Paramahamsa ji started looking at the idol. Mathura Babu started complaining to God that you are God, how did theft happen in front of you?
Mathura Babu was feeling sad, but Paramhans ji was looking at the idol with a smile. When Mathura Babu saw the smile on Paramhans ji's face, he asked the reason for it.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa's teachings
Paramhans ji said that Mathura Babu, expensive things have no importance for God. They are happy only with the selfless devotion of their devotees.
Those devotees whose feelings are selfless definitely get the blessings of God. God has no attachment to such expensive things.
Hearing these things, Mathura Babu's sorrow went away, he understood that he was unnecessarily attracted to these things and because of these things he had also become egoistic.
