Today is Anant Chaturdashi. Being the last day of Ganesh Utsav, Ganpati immersion will be done. There are 2 auspicious times for this throughout the day. You can immerse the idol as per your convenience, but keep in mind that this work should be done before sunset. According to the scriptures, idols are not immersed after sunset.
It is okay to immerse the idol at home. In this regard, it is said in Brahmapuran and Mahabharata that polluting rivers is a sin, therefore Ganesh ji should be immersed in a pot or a new big vessel filled with water.
Ganesha is the lord of water element, therefore immersion should be done Water is one of the five elements. By dissolving in it, the idol gets merged with its original element. Ganesha is considered to be the lord of the water element among the five elements. It is through water that the physical form of Lord Ganesha becomes formless. It is also a symbol of the oneness of God. Hence the importance of immersion in water.

There is a sense of sacrifice in Ganpati immersion Ganesh Visarjan does not mean just immersing the idol in water. This process of idol immersion explains that whatever we have created in this material world is temporary and will dissolve in the end, so instead of getting trapped in the illusion of the world, we should awaken our inner wisdom. By understanding immersion, we can use our wisdom properly and get free from the attachment of the world and abandon it.
