Expert: Dr. Tanmai Yarmal Jain, Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Pune
Question- Why does the incidence of heart attack suddenly increase during Navratri festival, Garba and marriage across the country?
Answer- Millions of cells in our body require blood every moment to function. From our birth till our death, the heart keeps doing this work continuously without getting tired, that is, it keeps pumping blood and keeps supplying blood to every part of the body 24 hours a day.
Whether heart attack occurs after a certain age or while dancing at a wedding, festival or while working out in the gym, the reason behind it is always the same. That means the health of our heart is not good. Due to our lifestyle and genetics, the heart has become weak and the job of pumping blood has become challenging for it.
Heart attacks occur during hardcore physical activity because at that time the body needs more blood and the heart works harder to meet the demand. On normal days, despite being weak, the heart can do enough work to meet its daily needs, but when the workload suddenly increases, it cannot handle it and stops.

According to the famous medical journal 'De Lecent', about 5-6 lakh people die every year in India due to sudden cardiac arrest.

Question- Why should common people also take training in giving CPR?
Answer- Dr. Tanmai Yarmal Jain says that crisis can occur at any time in life. God forbid something like this suddenly happens to someone you love. In such a situation, if you have knowledge about CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and know how to give it, you can save someone's life. In case of cardiac arrest, when someone is taken to the hospital, the first thing doctors do is give CPR. In 60 to 70 percent cases, the patient's life is saved. Well it is not difficult at all. You just need to know its basic science and method of doing it.
Question- Where and how can I take training in giving CPR? Answer- This year, the Union Health Ministry has started a campaign to provide training in CPR to save the lives of patients. CPR training is being provided in many institutions including hospitals, medical education centers, medical universities. UGC (University Grant Commission) has also asked all the universities and colleges of the country to provide basic life support training including CPR to the people with the help of doctors and medical experts.
If you also ask your nearest hospital, you will be able to know about many such centers in your city, where CPR training is provided for free. So, definitely learn this and always be ready to save someone's life in trouble.
