Tomorrow is Chhath Puja on 7th November. Today (6 November) is the second day of Chhath Puja festival. This is the great festival of Sun worship. Arghya will be offered to the setting sun on the evening of Kartik Shukla Shashthi on 7th November and to the rising sun on the morning of 8th November.

According to Ujjain's astrologer Pt. Manish Sharma, generally there is a tradition of offering water to the rising sun, but on the festival of Chhath Puja, Arghya is offered to the setting sun. Lord Surya is among the Panchadevs and hence all auspicious works begin with the worship of Panchadevs. Arghya should be offered to the Sun God every morning. Sun worship eliminates negative thoughts and provides health benefits. One should offer water to the Sun and chant the mantras and names of the Sun. On the festival of Chhath Puja, the sister of Sun God i.e. Chhath Mata is worshipped.

Beliefs related to Chhath Mata

It is believed that nature had divided itself into six parts. The sixth part of these is called Mother Goddess. Chhath Mata is considered to be the mental daughter of Lord Brahma. The sixth form of Goddess Durga i.e. Katyayani is also called Chhath Mata. Chhath Mata is considered to be the sister of Sun God. For this reason, Chhath Mata is worshiped along with Lord Surya. Chhath Mata is considered the goddess who protects children. For this reason, Chhath Puja fast is observed to wish good luck, long life and good health of the children. Another belief is that in Bihar, Goddess Sita, Kunti and Draupadi also observed Chhath Puja fast and due to the effect of the fast, they died. All the troubles of life had gone away.
