Indian engineers behind Apple's first AI phone: Worked on camera innovation, design and processing chip in iPhone 16

Apple launched the iPhone 16 series with AI features on September 9, with a starting price of Rs 79,900.

iPhone 16, the first artificial intelligence (AI) based iPhone maker Apple, is being discussed all over the world. The role of three engineers of Indian origin has been very important in the manufacturing of this iPhone.

Product Manager Piyush Pratik, Camera Hardware Engineering Manager Paulom Shah, and Silicon Engineering Group Vice President Sribalan Santhanam were involved in the manufacturing of the iPhone 16 from the very beginning. These individuals played a key role in advancing the cutting-edge technology of the phone.

Piyush Pratik: Created camera control, was a gold medalist at IIT Delhi

Piyush Pratik has introduced advanced camera control in the iPhone 16 series. This phone has a dedicated camera control button. A single press captures a photo while sliding adjusts the zoom. Apart from this, pressing the button twice can switch between modes or settings. Pratik, who played an important role behind this feature, is a gold medalist from IIT Delhi.

Paulom Shah: Started as a camera design intern, now a team leader

Paulom Shah started at Apple as a camera design intern. He then became the leader of the team overseeing the iPhone's wide and telephoto camera design. He is currently the camera hardware engineering manager. Before joining Apple, Shah worked at BlackBerry and Lytro (part of Google). He earned a graduate degree in mechatronics engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2015.

Sribalan Santhanam: Has been associated with the semiconductor industry for 35 years

Santhanam currently leads the team developing Apple's A-series processors. He joined Apple in 2008 when the company acquired chip maker PA Semi. PA Semi's technology is used in iPhone processors. Santhanam was the Vice President of Design Engineering at PA Semi. He has been associated with the semiconductor industry since 1990. He has a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Anna University Chennai.
