3. Increasing or decreasing the duration of a higher education degree program will not reduce its weightage.
UGC has issued SOP to give freedom to higher education institutions to increase or decrease the duration of degree programmes. According to this, UG students can increase or decrease the duration of their degree as per their wish, but they will have to take this decision by the end of the first or second semester. Students who reduce the duration will have to collect additional credit scores every semester. Whereas students who extend the duration can complete the credit score of the semester even after the end of the semester.
Students can increase the course duration by a maximum of two semesters only. Apart from this, the weightage of the degree will not be more or less depending on its duration. However, it will be clearly written on the degree as to how much time has been taken to complete the degree.
IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti had suggested this policy. He said that the process of higher education should be as flexible as possible so that more youth can get educated.
