Current Affairs 22 November: Armenia becomes member of 'Solar Alliance'; Kenya cancels power-airport deal with Adani; Khelo-India Youth Games in Bihar

1. Arrest warrant issued against Israeli PM Netanyahu: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on November 21. Netanyahu is accused of war crimes in Gaza. In this case, warrants have also been issued against former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant and former Hamas commander Mohammad Daif.

Issuing the warrant, the ICC said there were solid grounds to hold Netanyahu and Gallant responsible for starvation and atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza.

2. Armenia becomes 104th full member of the International Solar Alliance: Armenia on November 21 announced to become the 104th full member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). This alliance was established to promote solar energy.

The 7th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) was held from November 4 to 7, 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. In this session, India was elected as the chairperson and France as the co-chairperson.

India has been elected as the chair and France as the co-chair in the 7th session of ISA. More than 120 countries and global partners participated in this session. International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an international group of countries located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These are solar resource-rich countries, known as Sunshine Countries. ISA is a treaty-based intergovernmental organization that aims to bring about change in the field of solar energy. It aims to achieve energy security with emphasis on climate-friendly and renewable energy resources. It was launched by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in November 2015 at COP-21 in Paris, France. It is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, India. ISA is also called the International Agency for Solar Policies and Applications. More than 120 countries have signed the ISA Framework Agreement. The first conference of the International Solar Alliance was held in 2018 by PM Narendra Modi And was organized under the leadership of the then President of France Emmanuel Macron.

3. Kenya cancels power-airport deal with Adani: On November 21, the Kenyan government announced the cancellation of all deals with Adani Group. These included big projects like power transmission and airport expansion. Both the deals were worth Rs 21,422 crore.

The Kenyan government has taken this decision after 8 people including Indian industrialist Gautam Adani were accused of bribery and fraud worth billions of rupees in America.

The Government of Kenya had signed a power transmission deal worth $736 million i.e. Rs 6,217 crore with the Adani Group. Under this deal, infrastructure was to be created for electricity transmission in Kenya. Apart from this, Adani Group had signed a power transmission deal worth $ 1.8 billion i.e. Rs 15,205 crore. A deal was also signed. In this, a runway was to be built at Nairobi International Airport and a terminal was to be constructed. In return, Adani Group was to be entrusted with the operation of the airport for 30 years. Both these deals worth approximately Rs 21,422 crore have now been cancelled.

4. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launches VISION portal: Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched Vikas Bharat Initiative for Student Innovation and Outreach Network i.e. VISION portal in New Delhi on 21 November. The initiative aims to promote education, skill development and innovation among underprivileged children.

Lauding the initiative, the Minister said that reaching out to the underprivileged youth helps in democratizing startup skills.

The portal will serve as a gateway to provide mentorship and training to people living in remote areas. This initiative is part of the 'Vision India@2047' project, which aims to make India a global leader in technology, education and economic growth. Vision India@2047 launched by India's top policy think tank 'Niti Aayog' to prepare a blueprint for India's development in the next 25 years. It aims to make India a global leader in innovation and technology, which will also be a model country in terms of human development and social welfare and a strong supporter of environmental sustainability.

5. Khelo India Youth Games and Para Games will be organized in Bihar: Khelo India Youth Games and Para Games will be organized in Bihar next year in April 2025. There will also be a gap of 10-15 days between the two games. This event will provide a big platform for the players of Bihar to showcase their talent.

6. There will be a stand in the name of legendary cricketer Jhulan Goswami in Eden Gardens: A stand at Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens stadium will be named after former legendary Indian women's cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) announced this on 21 November. CAB decided to rename Block B Gallery.

It will be unveiled in the name of Jhulan Goswami during India's first ODI against England on January 22 next year.
