August 28, 2024 At 8:17 pm, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren posted a copy of his resignation on 'X'. In 207 letters on a letter head bearing the state government's seal, Champai called Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren 'Guru ji'.
,
Respected Guruji, 'The party that I had dreamed of under your guidance, for which we had scoured forests, mountains and villages, has today deviated from its direction. JMM was like family to me. I never dreamed that I would have to leave it, but due to the events of the last few days, I have to take this difficult decision with great pain.
'Apart from you, there is no one in the party to whom I can share my pain. Because of this, I am resigning from all the posts of JMM.
Champai is now sharing with the people the pain of suddenly leaving the party in which he stayed for 40 years and became the CM. Want to tell in the election environment that if JMM does not support its most loyal leader, then how can it stand with the people.
In Jharkhand, which has 81 seats, the first phase of voting is to be held on November 13. Seraikela assembly remains a hot seat in this phase. BJP has given ticket to Champai Soren, known as 'Kolhan Tiger'. JMM has fielded old BJP leader Ganesh Mahali against him. Here there is a direct contest between two rebels.
Dainik Global News Daily reached Seraikela to know what the tribal voters think about how big a factor Champai is fighting with BJP for the first time.
Which party is so strong in Seraikela? JMM: Dominance in the assembly for 20 consecutive years, due to Champai's departure the matter got stuck. After the formation of Jharkhand, Seraikela seat has been held by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha since 2005. From here Champai Soren has been continuously winning elections on the symbol of JMM. The first assembly elections were held in 2005, when Champai defeated BJP's Laxman Tudu by 882 votes.
In 2010, both of them were facing each other again. Then Champai won by 3,246 votes. In 2014 and 2019, Champai defeated BJP candidate Ganesh Mahali.
Champai, who has been helping JMM win from Seraikela seat, is now in BJP. JMM has given ticket to BJP rebel leader Ganesh Mahali against Champai. Most of the voters in Seraikela are from the tribal community. Till now a large part of their population has been supporting JMM. Now after Champai changed sides, a problem has arisen here.
If the trust of tribal voters remains on JMM, then Ganesh Mahali can win this seat for the first time. However, looking at the environment on the ground, the possibility of this happening seems less.
4 reasons why JMM remained invincible from Seraikela 1. Out of total 3.6 lakh voters, 34% are tribal voters. These are the core voters of JMM. 2. The tribals here consider JMM founder Shibu Soren as their guru. 3. During the tenure of JMM government, facilities like schools, hospitals and hand pumps were provided in the tribal villages here. Its effect is visible on the voters. 4. JMM gives Rs 1,000 every month to tribal women under Maiyan Yojana. After the elections it will be increased to 2.5 thousand. This thing is in the minds of voters.
BJP: Party confident of bringing Champai, hopeful of victory in Seraikela After Jharkhand became a separate state, BJP never won from Seraikela assembly seat. However, the party always kept giving close fight to JMM by being number two here. In the 2014 assembly elections, BJP had fielded Ganesh Mahali against Champai Soren.
In this election the party lost despite winning. Champai got 94,746 votes and Ganesh got 93,631 votes. BJP lost by just 1,115 votes. In the 2019 elections, Champai got 1.1 lakh votes, while Ganesh Mahali got 95,887 votes.
This time the election environment has changed. After Champai joined BJP, the party did not give ticket to its old candidate Ganesh Mahali. Angered by this, Ganesh joined JMM, but it made no difference to BJP. The party is confident of winning the Seraikela seat by bringing Champai Soren in its fold. Champai is continuously visiting tribal villages and holding meetings. They are holding Janta Darbar every day at their homes also.
That's why BJP is trying hard to win Seraikela. 1. BJP got 44% votes in the 2014 assembly elections and 41% votes in 2019. That means its vote share had decreased by 3%. The party is trying to improve it on Champai's face. 2. Champai Soren was forcefully removed from the post of CM. This was considered as an insult to the big tribal leader of the state. Now BJP wants to capitalize on this. 3. While being a minister, Champai held several tribal conferences on 'Water-Jungle-Zameen' in Seraikela. People call him 'Dada'. Here for the tribals, their face matters more than the party.
The picture is of October 28, when BJP leader Champai Soren attended the Manjhi Pargana Mahasammelan held in Giridih.
Hindu and tribal voters advantage for BJP Of the 3.6 lakh voters in Seraikela seat, 88% are non-Muslims. Here we have the highest number of tribal voters, who have been making Champai victorious for 20 years. BJP is considering them as its strength. Tata Nagar is situated near Seraikela, which was established by Jamsetji Tata in 1912.
At that time the people who came here to work started living in the villages of Seraikela. Most of these were people from Hindi speaking states, who came from outside and settled here. Their generations have been living here for more than 100 years. Due to these voters, BJP has been getting support base in the last elections.
This time, with Champai joining BJP, tribal voters have also inclined towards him. The party is seeing this as a double advantage. To capitalize on this, along with Champai, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have also come out in the campaign.
Union Agriculture Minister and BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chauhan held a public meeting on November 3 in support of BJP candidate Koche Munda in Torpa Assembly constituency of Jharkhand.
Expert said – Champai factor will give BJP lead in Kolhan Senior journalist Anand Kumar, who was the editor of a newspaper in Jamshedpur, says, 'Champai once again seems to be gaining in Seraikela. His image is that of a big leader of the state. He has been continuously winning elections from here.
'Except the 2019 election of anti-incumbency against Raghuvar Das, the position of both the parties has been equal in the last 4 elections. BJP has been losing elections by very small margins.
'Champai Soren's joining BJP will not only benefit Seraikela seat, apart from this, the party's position will also be strengthened in Potka and Ghatshila assembly seats populated by Santhal voters.'
Personal influence of leaders has more impact in Kolhan Jai Prakash, editor of the Hindi newspaper of Seraikela Kharsawan, says, 'Seraikela is a seat on which not only Jharkhand but the entire country is eyeing. In the 2019 assembly elections, BJP did not get a single seat from Kolhan. This time, before the announcement of elections, the only seat on which the BJP candidate was decided is Seraikela seat.
'JMM candidate from Seraikela is Ganesh Mahali. He is not such a face who can shift BJP's votes to JMM. On the other hand, Champai's influence is such that he can divert JMM voters towards BJP.
Lest Champai too get screwed like Geeta Koda. Senior journalist Anand Kumar told us an interesting fact related to Seraikela seat. He says, 'Champai is looking strong on this seat. Still, it is not right to make preconceived notions about the tribal voters here. Their votes are decided the night before. There are many factors in this which the candidates have to take care of.
'It was costly for Geeta Koda, a big leader of Kolhan and wife of former CM Madhu Koda, to change the party. She has been MLA from Jagannathpur seat twice. She left Congress and joined BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. When she contested elections from West Singhbhum, she lost her own assembly seat by 20 thousand votes. In such a situation, Champai Soren will have to take care of this.
Champai's impeccable image is his USP Champai Soren's name never came into any controversy in his 45 years of politics. Champai Soren and BJP will also benefit from this. Although political experts believe that Champai can sail the BJP across Seraikela, but his influence on other seats is not so much that he can divert the old voters of JMM towards BJP.
Opinion of political parties on elections BJP: Champai Soren said – Jharkhand becomes a state in Atal government, only Lotus will win Champai Soren is confident about his victory on Seraikela seat. He says, 'I also fought a big battle with Guruji (Shibu Soren) to make Jharkhand a separate state. As long as the Congress government was at the Centre, it did not want to see Jharkhand as a separate state. She wanted to crush our Jharkhand movement.
'Congress fired bullets at hundreds of places here. Many people were martyred in this. The vermilion of the demands of many daughters-in-law was erased. Congress never tried to understand the Jharkhand movement closely.
'When the BJP government was formed at the Centre, it closely observed and understood the Jharkhand movement. Atal Bihari Vajpayee gave the status of a separate state to Jharkhand. Not only this, Santhali language script 'All Chiki' was included in the Eighth Schedule. BJP has always worked for the welfare of tribals. This time only BJP will form the government in Jharkhand.
JMM: Champai cheated those who made him MLA 6 times JMM candidate Ganesh Mahali, who is contesting against Champai in Seraikela, says, 'The tribal community made Champai MLA and CM 6 times, but Champai has always cheated the people here. They have been betrayed and humiliated. The tribal society is watching all this, its effect will be visible in the elections.
'Champai Soren is not a challenge for us. Seraikela has always been a stronghold of JMM. This time also the party will win from here. Only after the election results will we know whose side the tribals are with. Is the person or organization big? People of tribal society have never run after any particular person.
Munna Hembram, who met here, says, 'There is a saying – you have become a stranger in your own village. This is the condition of Champai Soren at present. Till now he was in JMM, then he joined BJP. This will definitely have an impact. Big leaders of BJP like Louis Marandi have now joined JMM. The same situation is now in BJP also. Ganesh has now joined JMM and Champai has joined BJP. There is going to be a tough fight between the two leaders.
Vijay Soren, who runs a grocery shop in Jilingagoda village, considers Champai as his elder brother. Calling him 'Dada', Vijay says, '5 years ago my father's health was very bad, we felt that he would not be able to survive. We were very troubled, but Champai Dada helped us a lot.
Sukhlal Sardar, who was a driver in the office of Seraikela Deputy Commissioner, says, 'Champai should not have left Shibu Soren because he was associated with him from the beginning. Now he is of retirement age from politics. It would have been better if he had remained in JMM and said goodbye to politics after winning. Now he has changed the party, so it is difficult to say whether he will win or lose.
1. Champai Soren said – Bangladeshis are occupying villages, conversion increased in Jharkhand
2. How big an issue is Bangladeshi infiltration in Jharkhand elections: People said – 4 lakh/bigha land rate, tribals went away from villages, only 'Mian' left.
3. On the land for which Hemant went to jail, there is only grass, the caretaker said – CM never came here
