This fast is mentioned in many Puranas including Vaman, Narad, Padma. According to them, this Karva Chauth fast, observed for prosperity and good fortune, also increases the lifespan of both husband and wife.
Fast for husband was also observed in Satya Yuga, Treta and Dwapar Yuga.
The tradition of observing fast for the long life of the husband has been going on since Satyayuga. It started with the patriotism of Savitri. When Yama came, Savitri stopped him from taking her husband and with her strong vow she got her husband back. Since then, fasts were started for the long life of her husband.
In Tretayuga, from the time of Ikshvaku, Prithu and Harishchandra, fasting was observed for husbands in Raghukul. Draupadi is the wife of Pandavas in Dwapar era. During his exile period, Arjun had gone to the Nilgiri Mountains to do penance. Draupadi sought help from Lord Krishna to protect Arjan. He asked Draupadi to observe the same fast as Mother Parvati had observed for Lord Shiva. Draupadi did the same and after some time Arjun returned back safely.
