There is a story related to the churning of the ocean. In ancient times, the happiness and opulence of the gods had ended. Then all the gods came to Lord Vishnu, so that the lost happiness and opulence of heaven could be returned. Lord Vishnu advised the gods that they should churn the ocean along with the demons. From this churning many divine gems will come out and finally nectar will emerge, drinking which all the gods will become immortal. The gods talked to the demons as per the orders of Lord Vishnu and all the demons also got ready to churn the ocean in the greed of nectar. During the churning, 14 gems emerged. When nectar came out during the churning of the ocean, a war broke out between the gods and demons for it. Then Lord Vishnu took Mohini avatar and started making the gods drink the nectar. When all the gods were drinking the nectar, a demon named Rahu reached there in the guise of the gods. Rahu had cheated and drank the nectar while sitting among the gods. Moon and Surya had recognized Rahu sitting among the gods. Moon and Sun informed Lord Vishnu about this. Lord Vishnu got angry and severed Rahu's head from his body, because Rahu also drank the nectar, hence he did not die. Rahu's head got separated from his body. His head became Rahu and torso became Ketu. Moon and Sun had revealed the secret of Rahu, hence Rahu considers Moon and Sun as his enemy and from time to time afflicts these two planets. In the scriptures this event is called solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.
